Who & How We Serve

Who We Serve

Reading Connections serves any Guilford County adult over the age of 18 desiring to improve literacy skills. Students enroll at Reading Connections with a specific learning objective already in mind (e.g. earning their high school equivalency in the long-term, obtaining a driver's license in the short-term). The average student scores at the 4th grade reading level or below.  These adults are less likely to be employed full-time, to earn high wages or to vote. They are more likely to receive public assistance, live in poverty and rely on resources other than printed materials for information.

Approximately 47% of our students are native English speakers and 53% are non-English speakers. Reading Connections is currently serving adults as young as 18 and as old as 85. They have learned about Reading Connections from other students or through referrals from agencies such as the Department of Social Services, Guilford Technical Community College, Greensboro Housing Authority, Goodwill, and others.

Statistics

Reading Connections served 844 adult literacy students and 122 community students in 2015-2016. Our students completed a combined total of 23,448 hours of instruction. Of our full-time students, 51% advanced at least one functional literacy level. 115 new tutors received training. 272 volunteers tutored over the course of the year.
