Reading Connections Advocacy Statement: House Bill 2
Reading Connections provides literacy skills training for a better job, career, and life to thousands of people in Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding communities. We serve people of many different backgrounds who are seeking to improve workplace skills, compete for better paying jobs, study for their citizenship test, read holy scriptures, help their children read or do homework, and become more successful in their jobs.
We fundamentally believe that everyone in North Carolina has the right to pursue their life goals and ambitions regardless of gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity/gender expression.
As a result of our duty to serve all people in Guilford County and North Carolina, Reading Connections must speak out against HB2 and call for its repeal. The provisions of HB2 encourage and codify discrimination against many of the adults and families we serve, especially those who earn a minimum wage. We are deeply concerned about its negative impact on the businesses, nonprofit organizations, and communities we partner with and serve.
Reading Connections stands with other organizations and residents to loudly say: "we are not this."
